HOW DID AMVCE BEGIN?

Our Story

The Cuban Veterinary Association in Exile (AMVCE), originally known as the Cuban Veterinary College in Exile, was founded in the early 1960s in Miami, Florida.

It was established by the first Cuban veterinarians who arrived in the United States between 1960 and 1961. Among its most influential founders were Dr. Cristóbal Manuel Gonzales Mayo and Dr. Esteban Aquiles Morera, who played a decisive role in coordinating efforts with U.S. government officials, including Senators Stuart Symington and Hubert Humphrey.

From its inception, the organization also brought together engineers, educators, physicians, and licensed professionals who shared a commitment to preserving professional identity in exile.

Dr. Mayo helped establish the framework for the recertification examination process under Florida Resolution #4 (Document #0431, 1962), enabling Cuban veterinarians to obtain licensure and practice in the United States through an accelerated pathway.

Over nearly five decades, AMVCE has integrated more than 1,000 professionals, holding elections every four years. The current president is Alberto Lopez, originally from Camagüey, Cuba.

1960

Foundation of AMVCE

The Cuban Veterinary College in Exile was founded in Miami by Cuban veterinarians who arrived between 1960 and 1961, preserving professional identity in exile. This initiative ensured the continuity of Cuban veterinary knowledge and professional collaboration abroad.

2015

Institutional Renewal

In 2015, AMVCE began a period of renewal and modernization. The organization strengthened its structure, reactivated member engagement, and reinforced its commitment to preserving the heritage of Cuban veterinary medicine while adapting to a new generation of professionals.

2017

International Congress & Expansion

In 2017, AMVCE expanded its international presence by organizing a landmark congress that united professionals across borders. This milestone strengthened global collaboration and reaffirmed the organization’s leadership within the veterinary community in exile.

2019

Academic & Professional Strengthening

By 2019, AMVCE deepened its academic initiatives and professional networking efforts. Educational programs, lectures, and collaborative opportunities helped elevate standards and foster mentorship among members.

2021

Resilience During Global Challenges

In 2021, amid global challenges, AMVCE demonstrated resilience by maintaining communication, support, and professional solidarity among its members. Virtual engagement ensured continuity of mission and connection.

2022

Community Reconnection

In 2022, AMVCE reactivated in-person gatherings, strengthening community bonds and revitalizing its presence. Members reconnected through meetings and collaborative initiatives that reinforced unity and shared purpose.

2023

Growth & Future Vision

In 2023, AMVCE entered a new phase of growth, focusing on sustainability, leadership development, and expanding its impact across generations. The organization continues to honor its legacy while building a strong future.
